Wearing a Leather Jacket Without Looking like a Biker
You don’t need to be a biker to pull off the leather look.
We get it, though – leather jackets are nearly synonymous with bikers. In fact, there’s an entire style of jacket dedicated to the look!
Whilst biker jackets are undeniably one of the most popular categories of leather jacket on the market, there are still a great range of alternative styles to choose from; from the café racer jacket to the bomber jacket, or the flight jacket to the field coat. Each of these can establish their own sense of unique character, allowing you to craft a look that’s just perfect for you.
Don’t get us wrong – if you do prefer the rugged, edgier style that a biker jacket might give you, then there are still plenty of ways that you can embrace the grungy fashion must-have without looking like an extra from Sons of Anarchy!
Here’s your handy guide on how you can wear a leather jacket, WITHOUT looking like a biker.
Keep the Jacket in good condition
Okay – so this might sound a little obvious...
If you’re about to purchase a beautiful (expensive!) leather jacket, your priority SHOULD be on keeping it in great condition. You absolutely MUST look after your leather, so in turn, it can look after you.
When you think of the biker look, you probably think of rugged, somewhat careless men with holes in their jeans and rips in their coats. Whilst it certainly works for them, allowing bikers to show off their punky, rebellious personalities, the thought of intentionally damaging a high quality leather jacket such as the ones we offer makes us feel a bit… nauseous.
If you take good care of your jacket, regularly moisturizing it to keep the surface smooth, soft and shiny, the jacket will NOT crack as quickly, so you’ll appear more sensible and less biker-ish.
Don’t put patches on it!
Patching your jacket might seem like a great idea, and most of the time it does look really, really cool. The thing is that patches DO make you look kinda punky, as they’re massively associated with the alternative scene and fashion niche.
When you look at a stereotypical biker (or punk), they’ve probably got patches all over their leather – from a huge back-patch on the rear of the jacket to smaller labels and names sewn into the front.
If you’re trying to avoid looking like a biker, try to avoid wearing patches. One or two small ones will be okay, but don’t go over-board with it!
Keep your appearance clean
Bikers are known for having big, bushy beards or for being covered from head to toe in tattoos. It’s not a bad look by any stretch of the imagination, and for some people, it really does work.
For those who are trying to avoid the biker look, though, you’re best off trying to keep a clean appearance. You don’t need to be completely clean-shaven or not have any tattoos at all – just try to tone it down!
If you want to look like an anarchist but not like a biker, there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of stubble and sleeves that stop at the wrist! This one is mostly down to the wearer’s preference, though, so don’t worry too much about making this compromise.
Sneakers, not boots
One of the best ways that you can get away with wearing a leather biker jacket but not looking like a biker is by pairing it with sneakers instead of boots; sure, boots look great with any leather jacket (can’t beat a nice pair of docs!), but they might give the appearance that you belong on top of a growling Harley.
Sneakers are stylish, fashionable and comfortable, making them a great alternative to a good pair of combat boots.
Skinny jeans are one way to make any outfit look so much better; it doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like or how you usually dress - by adding a decent pair of skinny jeans, you’ll be improving your outfit tenfold.
This rule can be implemented whenever you choose to wear a leather jacket – simply match it with a good pair of skinnies, and you’ll instantly look like an Instagram-worthy fashionista. For an added bonus, throw in your favourite sneakers from the tip just above!
Add some color
Leather jackets don’t need to just be black, gray or brown – try throwing some color into the mix. Take a look at this Camel Suede jacket from our website – it looks sensible, stylish and bold, without making the wearer look at all like a biker!
Leather jackets come in all sorts of colors: whites, reds, pinks… yellow is my personal favourite! Why not look for a high-quality, vibrant, beautiful and brazenly colored coat to bring out your personality?
The best thing about adding a colored leather jacket to your wardrobe is that it can still give you a punky, rebellious and edgy look – perfect for when you want to really make an impact.
Try a different style
Biker jackets may be one of the most iconic types of leather jackets out there, but that doesn’t make them any more impressive than the plenty of other styles available.
Bomber jackets, for example, are a great way to show off a distinguished and elegant look; they’re much subtler than a biker jacket, but they’ll still make you look refined, fashionable and attractive!
Brando & McQueen offer a great range of high-quality jackets in a variety of styles – why not take a look at our fantastic online store?
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you own the look. It doesn’t matter if you do look like a biker, an anarchist a rebel, or, well, anything else!
If you look good, you’ll feel good – be confident in whatever you choose to wear.
You’ll end up looking killer anyway!
